Desktop Environments
LinuxDoors ships with Xfce and MATE. Six more full
desktops install from the Packages page with a
single command — pkg pulls in the whole dependency tree,
and each one adds itself to the login screen’s session menu.
On the ISO
Installed by default — no download needed.
Xfce
The default LinuxDoors desktop — X11 + Mesa + GTK3, lightdm, panel, xfwm4, Thunar, xfce4-terminal. Lightweight by choice, not by missing pieces.
MATE
A full traditional-style GTK3 desktop — Marco, mate-panel, Caja, mate-terminal and the MATE control centre. Also bundled on the ISO, ready to pick at the login screen.
Install with pkg
Run the command in a terminal (or install the same packages from the LinuxDoors Package Manager), then log out and switch sessions. Every package is built from real upstream source.
KDE Plasma
Plasma Workspace, plasma-desktop, System Settings, KWin, the Breeze theme and the full Plasma / KDE Frameworks 6.29 stack on Qt 6.11 — around 250 packages, all from real KDE source. Both a “KDE Plasma” (X11) and a “Plasma (Wayland)” session appear at the login screen. On real GPUs where OpenGL acceleration is patchy, the package ships a KWin fix that skips the failed OpenGL attempt entirely and goes straight to CPU compositing — the difference between a session that stalls on nearly every frame and one that is simply fast.
$ sudo pkg install plasma-desktop
GNOME
GNOME Shell 48, Mutter, GJS, gnome-session, gnome-settings-daemon, gnome-control-center, gnome-keyring and the Adwaita icon themes on GTK4 and libadwaita — a complete GNOME desktop compiled from real GNOME source. “GNOME”, “GNOME on Xorg”, and “GNOME on Wayland” sessions all appear at the login screen. (Pinned to 48 — the last GNOME series that still supports an X11 session.)
$ sudo pkg install gnome-desktop
Cinnamon
The Linux Mint desktop — Cinnamon shell, Muffin, Nemo, the Cinnamon settings daemon, screensaver and control centre, built from Mint source against this project’s CJS 128 / mozjs 128.
$ sudo pkg install cinnamon-desktop
Budgie
The Budgie Desktop — the Budgie panel and Raven, budgie-daemon, its polkit and power dialogs, running as a native Wayland session on labwc, Budgie’s own lightweight wlroots-based compositor (no Mutter, no GNOME session underneath — this is Budgie’s real current release series, not the older X11 line).
$ sudo pkg install budgie-desktop
LXQt
A lightweight Qt desktop — lxqt-session, the LXQt panel, config, runner, notification and power daemons, pcmanfm-qt and qterminal, with Openbox as the window manager. The lxqt-desktop package pulls in the whole set.
$ sudo pkg install lxqt-desktop
Enlightenment
The Enlightenment window manager / compositor (E27) on the EFL 1.28 libraries — its own lightweight toolkit and compositor, no GTK or Qt required.
$ sudo pkg install enlightenment
GNOME 51 (VNC)
GNOME 51 dropped its X11 backend entirely, so this one doesn’t work like the desktops above — there’s no local session to pick at the login screen. Installing it turns this machine into a real x2go server offering a headless GNOME 51 desktop (gnome-shell, Mutter, gnome-session, gnome-settings-daemon) over VNC, via gnome-remote-desktop.
$ sudo pkg install gnome51-desktop
x2goclient-gnome51vnc package on a LinuxDoors machine — sudo pkg install x2goclient-gnome51vnc. Either way, point a session at this machine and pick the "GNOME 51 (VNC)" entry from its own session-type list; it tunnels a local port over SSH straight to the gnome-remote-desktop VNC server this package starts — no login-screen session menu involved.
pkg needs root — sudo pkg install …, or
su -c 'pkg install …' root. These desktops are not
bundled in the ISO to keep the download small; installing one only
adds it, and never removes Xfce or MATE. On the login screen, the
session menu is the small icon next to the Log In button.
